drive the ‘medalta trail

Drive the scenic route that a local resident brought to our attention, he refers to as ‘The Medalta Trail’. This route will lead you from Highway 1 into Historic Downtown Medicine Hat through the Medalta Historic Clay District and well worth the detour.

There are no signs, click the map below to follow the route on Google Maps.

  • Exit onto Highway 41 north from Highway 1 (just before Dunmore)
  • Follow Highway 41 for approximately 7 kms and turn west on Highway 41A.
  • Just past the hamlet of Veinerville, you will start to decent downwards to the city limits of Medicine Hat.
    • The historic site of Medicine Hat Brick & Tile Factory, Redcliff Pressed Brick and Hycroft China Ltd. Factory will be on the north side
    • They have a wonderful museum and gift shop. Definitely worth checking out.
  • Continuing on you’ll see signs directing you back to Hwy 1 and Hwy 3. You can follow these, but I suggest continuing on for a few more blocks.
  • This will bring you past the train station & historical buildings along North Railway Street. You can still get back to the main route via 3rd Street SE.
  • Turn left at the lights onto Maple Ave, then left again on 1st Street SE.
  • You are now in the heart of Historic Downtown. There are many boutiques, restaurants, cafes and streets surrounded by murals and street art.
